Background:

The Forum for the Education of Travellers' Children (NI) identified a need for materials to support intercultural education in Northern Ireland.

Interculturalism in education means the recognition of the right of different cultures to be included in the curriculum and to be recognised and valued for their uniqueness. An intercultural curriculum does not present one culture as the 'norm', rather it reflects an equality of cultural esteem for all.

The CD-ROM contains the 'scrapbooks' of seven children who all live in Ireland. The children are fictional characters; their lives are based on the lives of seven real children within Ireland. These seven 'life experiences' are presented in fictional form.

They are NOT the life experiences of the children whose photographs represent characters.

The characters, four girls and three boys, are from a variety of environments; for example rural, urban, small town, city. They live in different areas of Ireland. There are similarities and differences in their lives.

Four ethnic minorities within Ireland - the Chinese, Indian, Muslim and Traveller communities - are represented through the characters of Aisha, Ian, Charlie and Roshni.
