The
following two short courses will be offered by the National Youth Arts
Programme in Autumn 2004.
1. WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE:
AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE FOR ARTISTS
This course is aimed at artists of all disciplines, who have begun to
work with young people or would like to. It aims to equip artists with
the necessary skills and information for working effectively with groups
of young people in out-of-school contexts.
The course will cover:
* Negotiation of roles and responsibilities with the host organisation,
especially in dealing with the youth worker or counterpart
* Identifying the artist's own approach and methodology - how to articulate
this and use it as a framework in negotiating with the host and the group
* How to motivate and engage a group of young people
* Stages of group development, group work
* Facilitation - what is it, how is it done effectively?
* How to deal with conflict and disruptive behaviour constructively
* Developmental stages of young people - tailoring a project to the age
group
* Child Protection - guidelines for good practice
The course consists of a preparatory consultation day to identify course
participants' particular needs and concerns, followed by one full day
and one half day.
Consultation Day: Wednesday 13th October, 10 - 1pm
Day One: Wednesday 3rd November, 10 - 4pm
Day Two: Wednesday 10th November, 10 - 1pm
The course will take place at the Dublin Writers Museum, Parnell Square,
Dublin 1. There are 15 places on the course.
COURSE FEE
The course costs EUR150 per participant to cover tuition and lunch etc.
'WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE' FACILITATOR
The course is facilitated by Majella Perry. Majella is an arts training
and development consultant based in Ennis, Co. Clare. Majella has a Degree
in Theatre and Education from Utrecht College of the Arts, the Netherlands
having previously completed a Diploma in Community Arts and Development.
With a background in youth work Majella has worked with regional youth
work organisations in various developmental roles and was training officer
with the National Youth Federation in Dublin. Supporting arts organisations
in encouraging the participation and engagement of young people in the
arts is a central tenet to her work. Majella has worked with a range of
arts organisations and cultural institutions including the Irish Museum
of Modern Art (IMMA), The Abbey Theatre, the National Youth Arts Programme
and local authority arts offices. Majella is author of a number of publications
on youth arts including 'The Sparkling Seven' (IMMA) and 'Creating Magic'
(NYaP).

2. DRAMA SPACES 2004
This course has been designed to provide those working with young people
with an understanding of the theory and practice of drama and theatre
education. Participants will be equipped with the skills, information
and experiences to enable them to develop drama as a methodology in non-formal
youth /education settings.
The course aims to:
* Facilitate participants in understanding and applying the basic skills
of drama in working with young people;
* Enable participants to use drama and theatre in personal and social
development of the young people they work with;
* Enable participants to devise and structure learning situations through
drama;
* Develop participants' skills in facilitating drama work and using theatre
as a means of dramatic exploration.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course is designed for those working with young people in non-formal/education
settings. It is essential that all those participating have basic facilitation
and group-work skills.
The course will take place in the Dublin Writers Museum, Parnell Square,
Dublin 1. There are 16 places on the course.

Please note Saturday workshops run from 11.00-2.00pm. All other days
are from 10am to 4.00pm

DRAMA SPACES FACILITATOR
The course will be facilitated by Sarah Fitzgibbon. Sarah has been involved
in youth theatre in Ireland for 16 years and is currently the Artistic
Director of Dublin Youth Theatre. From 1998-2001, she was Development
Officer with the National Association for Youth Drama. Over the last 10
years, she has worked as an actor, actor-teacher, workshop facilitator,
a youth drama trainer, education officer, a writer and director for theatre
for young audiences. As a writer for early years, her plays include Jackie's
day('98) and Rudie Bits ( '01) with Graffiti Theatre Company. Little Louie
Tells a Story ('02) was produced by Replay Theatre Co. A new Jackie's
day is currently on tour in the Munster region. Sarah is delighted to
be back working with the National Youth Arts Programme on Drama Spaces.
