NLAW

National Adult Literacy Week (NLAW) this year has the theme “low levels of literacy as a barrier to the legal / justice system”. The campaign runs from September 22nd to 27th and is organised by the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA). This campaign will be targeted at people who work in the sector to raise their awareness and get them to be more “plain English oriented”.

Themes for the campaign
There will be three general themes for the NALA campaign and these will be:

  • Access and understanding of an individuals rights
  • How to use plain English to boost the effectiveness of legal/justice text based materials
  • The link between low levels of literacy and crime/social exclusion.

NLAW will comprise:
Events organised in conjunction with major legal/justice organisations

  • A range of ‘Literacy and the legal/justice system’ printed support material
  • A national conference
  • Local events with 126 VEC Adult Literacy Schemes
