Integrating Literacy

The Literacy Development Centre in Waterford Institute of Technology has designed a course on Integrating Literacy as part of our National Certificate in Literacy Development. The module is designed for those who are responsible for Literacy Tuition in sites other than Literacy Schemes.

The module is meant for anyone whose main job in a training centre is to tutor in literacy. These include people with no literacy training who find themselves teaching literacy anyway, and people with initial literacy tutor training. This is one module from a National Certificate course which WIT have been running for the Literacy service. There are 12 modules (10 credits each; 120 for a full Certificate). There is also an add-on Diploma with 6 modules and this year it is hoped to develop an add-on degree with a further 6 modules. WIT would also like to open the courses to people working outside the Literacy service as such and this is why they have developed the module on Integrating Literacy.

The course aims to familiarise tutors from both these backgrounds with the approaches outlined in the NALA Integrating Literacy guidelines, so that they will be able to

1.link their literacy sessions with what their learners are doing on a daily basis in the training centre,
2.work out an individual learning plan that integrates literacy and vocational learning objectives and programmes,
3.support other staff in making their subject more literacy-friendly
4.promote specific systems and procedures in their centre to support literacy development .

The course will run in Cork on March 10,11,12 and May 5,6,7. Residential facilities will be provided in St Dominic's where the course takes place.
