Integrating Literacy Course

The course is being run in Galway city from end September 04 to March 05. It's being funded by FAS, so naturally priority will be given to staff from FAS centres, and the course will run only if we get a significant number of FAS applications. However, some places are available to STTC staff. Click to access the timetable and application form.

The course aims to enable vocational instructors and tutors build literacy support and development into their programmes.

Topics covered include:

• literacy awareness (causes and effects of literacy difficulties);
• how adults learn;
• philosophies of adult learning;
• basic approaches to teaching reading, writing, spelling, numeracy;
• integrated lesson-planning:
• building literacy and numeracy into your training programme;
• integrated materials: adapting and designing teaching materials to integrate literacy/numeracy;
• assessment; a whole-centre approach to literacy.
