Sustaining Progress, the current Social Partnership agreement, is at the half-way point and undergoing a mid-term review by all the social partners. The Wheel’s Health Spoke…

The Wheel’s Health Spoke* (issue driven network) has two aims:

  • To maximise the contribution that the Community and Voluntary health sector can make to the delivery of better healthcare to the Irish people through collective action
  • To enhance the delivery of quality health services in Ireland through partnership between the Community and Voluntary health sector and the statutory sector

We need you to make this happen. For more information on the Health Spoke, contact Policy Support Officer Leah Coyne on (01) 454 8727 or email: leah@wheel.ie

THE WHEEL’S SUBMISSION TO GOVERNMENT RECOMMENDS ‘NEW SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT BODY NEEDED’ FOR FUTURE OF CHARITIES

What shape will the regulation of the Charities Sector in Ireland take in the future? That’s the question at the centre of the Government’s recent consultation process "Establishing a Modern Statutory Framework for Charities".

In February The Wheel toured Ireland holding a series of regional information seminars on the paper. Using feedback from these seminars, The Wheel sent its views to the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in May. The Wheel’s submission was one of seventy nine submissions received by the Department.

We welcome on broad principles the changes envisaged for the charities sector including the core proposal – the development of a proposed new regulatory body for charities.

At the same, there is a need for a Support and Development body for charities so that they can deliver even greater public benefit. We believe the new proposed regulatory body cannot do both ie be both “pal and policeman” and a separate Support and Development body needs to be formed.

SUCCESS FOR SEEDING MEETING 2004…

On 20 May over 120 representatives from Community and Voluntary organisations across Ireland attended The Wheel’s Seeding Meeting 2004 – Making the Connections Now/ Building Relationships for the Future – the objective of which was to provide participants with an overview of the latest developments and analysis of the Community and Voluntary sector and hear their comments and views in return.

Sessions with titles such as “do the people have the power” and “the state we’re in” made for lively roundtable discussions, with panelists from diverse backgrounds such as communications, community, human rights advocacy, rural activism, voluntary healthcare and the statutory sector providing analysis and answering questions from the floor.

PEER TO PEER NETWORKS

On 2nd June 2004, The Wheel hosted information seminars for its three Peer to Peer Support Networks - namely, Chief Officers, Fundraisers and Information Officers. Feedback from participants at each of the seminars was extremely positive. Each session consisted of two presentations followed by light refreshments and networking session.

  • Pat Montague from Montague Communications and Sheila Nordon from Irish Charities Tax Research Ltd addressed the Chief Officers Network on effective lobbying and campaigning skills
  • Mary Davis from the Special Olympics and Mark Lee from Eircom spoke about Corporate Fundraising and Sponsorship
  • Jane Curtin from The Irish Cancer Society and Fiona Ryan from The Wheel spoke to the Information Officers Network about how to increase their skills and understanding of how to access the Irish media

Copies of the presentations are available from The Wheel office.

Plans are now getting underway to organise the next seminars for the Networks - information will be posted The Wheel's website in due course.
