18 May, 2005 - Síle de Valera, T.D., Minister for Youth Affairs launches All-Ireland Traveller Art Exhibition

Síle de Valera, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science, this afternoon launched the final exhibition stage of the 2005 All-Ireland Traveller Art Competition in Dublin.

The Minister congratulated the National Association of Travellers’ Centres and the Navan Traveller Training Centre on organising the strong display of art which is spread over two venues, the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre and the Civic Office and commended all those who had worked so hard to make the competition a success including the distinguished panel of judges, the directors of the regional centres, the various youth projects, the traveller support groups and the visiting traveller teachers. In this regard the Minister commented: “I believe the strong display of all the paintings, drawings and photographs showcased here to-day is an indication of the competition’s growing popularity and reflects the enthusiasm for the event.”

In lauding the family aspect of the competition Minister de Valera emphasised how important exposure of works of art is for artists and the public alike and was supportive of initiatives redefining and encouraging the broadening of the arts to all, as she commented: “Access to art in its various forms in such venues as public libraries and open spaces, in galleries and educational establishments and in publicly-owned buildings gives welcome exposure to local artists and no small amount of pleasure to those who experience it.” The Minister also commented on the fact that aspects of art are incorporated in many Department of Education and Science assisted and funded programmes.

In conclusion Minister de Valera praised all the traveller artists who took part this year and in particular those who had exhibits on display at the two centres.
