16 DAYS
OF WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE
Womens
Aid is a voluntary organisation, which provides information, support
and advocates on behalf of women experiencing violence in their
own homes. As part of the 16 Days of Action, Womens Aid run
an annual 16 Days Awareness Campaign, whereby statistics on domestic
violence are mailed every day to politicians, media, unions, and
community groups.
The action is being held to highlight the prevalence of domestic
violence for women in Ireland and will mark International Day against
Violence against Women. Two of out every 5 calls to the Womens
Aid Helpline could not be answered in 2004 due to lack of resources
Two of five women were turned away from refuge in 2004 and one of
the Dublin refuges reports turning away up to 45 families per month.
Small selection
of statistical facts circulated:
In 2004, 22% of sexual violence reported to Rape Crisis Centres
throughout Ireland was committed by a male partner/ex-partner. A
further 32% were committed by a friend/acquaintance of the survivor.
Each year, an estimated 3.3 million children are exposed
to violence by family members against their mothers or female caretakers.
64% of Irish women surveyed who said they had experienced
violence by a partner said their children had witnessed the violence.
In 2003, the Gardaí dealt with 8,452 call outs to
domestic violence incidents.
Approximately 1 in 7 women in Ireland has experienced severe
abuse.
60% of 127 women resident in refuges in Northern Ireland
experienced violence during pregnancy. 13% lost their babies as
a result.
25% of all violent crimes reported involve a man assaulting
his wife or partner.
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre responded to almost 12,000
genuine counseling calls in 2004.
42% of women in Ireland have experienced some form of sexual
abuse in their lifetime.
Almost one quarter (23.6%) of perpetrators of sexual violence
against women as adults are intimate partners or ex-partners.
NB: All of the above are backed up by statistical referencing in
email circulation.
