KNOCKMAY INDUSTRIAL
ESTATE, PORTLAOISE, CO, LAOIS Mission Statement: "To provide training and support for each trainee, encouraging them to explore and realise their potential as an individual and within the traveller community". Objective: To provide an individual training programme to suit the needs of each trainee. In doing so, we are conscious of the Social, Cultural & Economic needs of each traveller. History & Location: St. Canices Training Centre first opened its doors to Travellers in Laois & Kildare in May 1989 offering 3-4 core subjects. Today, at the same location, it now offers over fifteen FETAC courses and from time to time covers a large range of other non exam courses. We are a 24 place Centre and recently commenced a BTEI programme for an additional 7 trainees. The purchase of an eighteen seater bus in 1999 has made our courses even more accessable to Travellers who otherwise would not be able to attend. Work Experience Programme: In January 2002 , we introduced a Work-Experience Programme. This plays
a vital role in helping trainees transfer from the programme to gainful
employment. We have endeavoured to foster close links with local employers
to help make this programme work. To date we have successfully placed
three trainees on this programme and the reports back were encouraging. |
