National Co-ordination Unit for Senior Traveller Training Centres

03 October, 2003 - Mr. Noel Dempsey T.D., Minister for Education and Science, visited St. Mel’s Senior Traveller Training Centre, Longford following it’s refurbishment:

Speaking to trainees at the centre Minister Dempsey said “each and every trainee in the centre has chosen to prioritise education and training as part of their daily lives. This is a decision about which you should feel justifiably proud”

The centre provides the means for those who have left school early to sample a wide variety of vocational options, to identify where interests and talents lie and to develop further skills in those areas, and very importantly to acquire qualifications. It is also concerned with the important areas of work experience, lifeskills and personal development. These provide participants with the communication skills, confidence, and practical knowledge and experience for an active role in their community and society generally.

The Minister concluded by congratulated all the trainees on their achievements and by saying “It is important to note that the Training Centre is concerned not only with the training needs of the Traveller Community but also with building and cementing community ties and fostering self-help and co-operation. Community support is essential if training initiatives for early school leavers are to succeed”.
