Around the Union in 25 days Initial position: The generation between 18 and 35 is confronted with the European enlargement as nobody else. Trading without borders and Free Movement of Persons result in high pressure of competition. From now on, there is not just Klaus from Würzburg and Maike from Hamburg applying for the same job, but also the Slovene Andrey and Gemma from Malta. The potential of rationalisation might cause, that the office in your home place will be closed - for the reason that one branch in united Europe is enough. Otherwise no other generation takes chances of the European enlargement and its integration: student exchange, ERASMUS university-years or European trainee-programs are everything else but exotic exemptions. More and more young professionals realise the chances of the free Movement and apply for jobs all arround Europe even in the new membership countries. At the same time the interest for politics is regressing. In the last European election in Germany, the turnout of voters under 35 years dropped down to 30 percentages from 50% in 1994. Basic approach After the enlargement, the European Union offers chances and interesting stories as well. Young people all over Europe are taking these chances, they are planning and forming the future of their Europe. Starting New Europe presents old and new members states of the Union in 25 days. The advantages of enlargement of the Union are not only demonstrated by the new member states: The whole continent is moving to a new age: we have to show, that the relations between all people and countries are changing. The eastern part is more western, and the western part more influenced by the east as it looks at first sight. Starting new Europe Starting New Europe is taking us on an expedition through the enlarged European Union. Each show starts with the arrival of the reporter in one EU country. Sometimes he has got an appointment already, sometimes he has to figure out where he is, and where he finds an interesting protagonist. The reporter knows not more about the country as the audience. Maybe he read something on his way, some basic facts, some clichés, thats it. Together with the reporter we experience a day somewhere in Europe. At the end of the day the reporter takes us away, we have to go. He is always looking for similarities of young Europeans, and shows us how they live on the new united continent. Travel targets The 25 states of the enlarged union: Next to the 15 old European states (United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Italy, Spain; Portugal and Greece) the ten countries that are joining the Union next year (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus. Interlocutors Starting new Europe is about its protagonists. Their age corresponds to the age of the target group (18-35 years). Beside ordinary people, the reporter meets also socialites. We will watch them, how they live, how their lives are influenced by the united Europe. At the same time we get their visions of Europe, their ideas of the future of this united continent. Young Europeans We will watch these young people see them working and spending their free time, we see their fears and worries. For example DJ Carlos, who shows us the nightlife of Barcelona and Maria, who is in trouble with her parents, because she wants to take the pill. We will learn about these young people, who think about their European perspective, who think about the situation of the Union. Business geniuses like the broker Chris, who doesnt mind the baisse at the London stock exchange, or the fisherman Jussi from Helsinki, who wants to restart life in Latvia. These Europeans embody the enlargement: they are Europe. It does not matter if they are from new or old part of the Union. DJ Carlos is in love with the party city Riga, broker Chris knows a lot about the business in the eastern part of Europe. And Maria knows to tell about her hopes of the new Europe. Socialites The problems of a farmer picking apples may be interesting, but stories like Claudia Schiffer gives birth to her child in London, or Oasis trashing around in Munich, also take place in Europe. For that reason the reporter meets socialites as well, who show the cities and talk about their perspective. © Peter Onneken, hr, 2005 |
