The National Association of Travellers’ Centres have produced a DVD profiling Travellers and employment in Ireland, as well as an accompanying educational pack to support workers in developing career paths with Travellers in Ireland. Training for trainers is being offered countrywide on this workshop, and participants and host-organisations are currently being sought. Further details from Martina Breen martinabreen@mac.com

A new play launches in December from the Traveller Wagon Wheel Theatre. Same Difference is written by Michael Collins and directed by Mick Rafferty, and will run at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin on the 3-5th December.   • The results of a Survey of Traveller Education Provision, were published in May 2006 by the Inspectorate of the Department of Education and Science. The report shows there has been significant progress in Travellers access to and participation in primary and post primary education. Almost all travellers attend primary school and there has been a three-fold increase in the number of students attending post primary schools in the past eight years.     Anne Serino is the director of Adult and Community Learning Services at Massachusetts Department of Education. Her email address is aserino@doe.mass.edu. She is interested in making contact and in sharing information on how they develop literacy skills needed to qualify for further education, job training, and better employment. ACLS provides a range of educational services for adults from basic literacy and numeracy to high school equivalency and adult diploma programmes.

  • Details of the Horsemen Project can be found at www.horsemenproject.org This project includes; the evaluation of the present courses that are available by the providers of the Horsemen Study modules in the participating countries; a consultation process to identify the present skills of Travellers and Roma in horse care; the development of courses that integrate the evaluation and consultation processes with the support of the accrediting bodies in each of the partner countries; and the implementation of the pilot course in Ireland, Spain, and Hungary.

  • Horsemen Project: funding has been approved from January 2003 to January 2005 - a 3 year timescale. The STTCs will be involved in piloting the programme with Exchange House being used as a conduit for ascertaining the perspective of Travellers in relation to their innate skills in horse-keeping.
