Mission Statement

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of our students, in a climate of mutual respect, by meeting their evolving education needs.

Background

The Tralee Senior Traveller Education Centre was set up in 2002 in response to the educational needs of marginalised people in North Kerry. It operates from two sites: Causeway and Listowel and is an integrated centre i.e. it accommodates both travellers and non-travellers. It is a 45 student centre and offers a range of subjects leading to FETAC qualifications, Junior Certificate and ECDL qualifications. It is hoped to offer the Leaving Certificate Applied in September 2007.

Purpose of The Tralee Senior Traveller Education Centre

  • To provide education opportunities for those who live in a rural area and who are marginalised
  • To introduce/re-introduce people to education
  • To meet expressed educational needs
  • To provide certificates for those who choose it
  • To empower students to 'open their own doors'

Staff

The programme is managed by a full-time director. There are twelve teachers: two are full-time, ten part time, and a part-time secretary. The programme is a full-time two year programme, with an extension for some students. Subjects offered include: Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development, I.T., Health Related Fitness, Art, and Crafts. The programme is funded by Kerry Education Services (VEC).

Remuneration

Students receive a weekly training allowance and childcare payments are available for pre-school children.
