St.Joseph’s was established in 1979 to meet the education needs of young Traveller women.

In 1984 the centre developed as a Senior Training Centre providing full time courses for Traveller women between the ages of 16 and 26 years. Initially the centre was jointly funded by Fas and the Department of Education. Presently it is funded by the Dept. of Education.

Trainees aim to acquire an appropriate level in the National Certificate in Vocational Awards in three core subjects - Maths, Communications and Personal/ Interpersonal Skills - and from the following range of modules:

  • Food/Cookery/Nutrition
  • Literacy/Computer
  • Childcare/PIay/Development
  • Art/Craft/Design/Flower Arranging/Leatherwork
  • Machine Knitting
  • Photography
  • Carpentry
  • Social Studies

The ethos of the Centre since its establishment in 1979 has always aimed to resource the total Finglas Traveller community and as a result a number of projects have developed.

These activities are resourced by the Finglas Traveller Support Group which also acts as a lobbying body mainly in the area of accommodation and education.

      Initiatives include:

  • The Women’s Social club, which has been meeting weekly since 1985.
  • St. Christopher Gales - the Men’s Gaelic Football Club.
  • TESO (Traveller Education and Support Options) is jointly managed and funded by the St.Vincent De Paul Society, Barnardo’s and the Finglas Traveller Support Group.
This project co-ordinates a broad spectrum of initiatives ranging from pre-school, to third level. The pre-schools and related initiatives - lending library service parent/toddler groups and parenting programmes are staffed by a team which includes a number of qualified Traveller women. At first level the project is involved in establishing round table discussions with school principals, teachers and support services. It aims to creating a more Traveller friendly environment within schools.

There is a major drive to encourage young Travellers to avail of second level education and to support them with homework and social clubs.

A significant number of local Travellers are accessing third level education through NUI Maynooth.

St. Joseph’s co-sponsored and initiated the start up and development of the Traveller Women’s Knitting Enterprise Project, now operating as Ganzee Knitwear.

In 1985, the Boys Training Centre was established and offers a similar range of programmes.
