Our Mission Statement ... to enable Travellers to live the life of their choice
to their fullest potential BACKGROUND The Establishment of a Training Centre for Travelling People in the Dundalk area was spear-headed by the local Travellers Committee of St. Vincent De Paul during the late 1970’s, when it set up a working committee with representatives from Co.Louth V.E.C., Fas and Dundalk U.D.C. The Committee evolved to become a Limited Company, Dundalk Workshop for Travelling People Ltd., which set about the establishment of such a workshop. In October 1985, the Company opened up a 24 place Training Centre for Travelling people in a leased premises on the Coes’s Road, Dundalk. Catering initially for travelling people, male and female, from the Dundallc and Drogheda areas, the Workshop quickly established itself, changing to an all-female facility and adopting the name, Tara Workshop. The Workshop moved to its present premises, part of Co. Louth V.E.C. former boys Tech. in Chapel Street, in 1990 where it continues to provide a wide-ranging training programme for 12 traveller women. Through the hard work of the funding members, and the Management Committee, the dedication of the present and former Directors and trainers and the constant interest of its trainees, Tara Workshop has grown to become an integral part of the services now available for the Travelling Community in Co. Louth. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Trainees in the Tara Workshop participate in a wide ranging Training/Development/Programme which includes, Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development/Social Skills, Crafts and Domestic Economy. During the course, which runs for 48 weeks, trainees interact with schools and other groups in the Community providing mutual opportunities for understanding of the different backgrounds and lifestyles. DEVELOPMENT During its 10 year existence, Tara Workshop has evolved from a mere base for training, to become a focal point and catalyst for other forms of development for Travelling People.
