Welcome to Shannon Bank Training Centre Shannon Bank Training Centre is a 24 place Travellers Training Centre which was established in 1985 for boys and girls aged 15½ and upwards. The Centre is managed on a daily basis by a Director, Secretary and three part time staff. The duration of the training course is 2 years, with a possibility of extension for some individual trainees on completion of their course. During the training course the young people partake in the following skills: Woodwork, Metalwork, Sewing, Social and Life Skills, Craftwork, Literacy, Numeracy, Psychology, Horticulture, Home Economics, Pottery, Computers, Self Development/ Grooming and Sports. The Training Centre is funded by Westmeath Vocational Educational Committee and run by a Management Committee made up of individuals from the VEC, Garda, Unions, local business people, and St. Vincent de Paul. All members of the Committee and the staff have the welfare of Travellers and underprivileged young people at heart and to equip the young trainees with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to enable them to assume control over the course of their working and private lives. Aim To encourage each young person from traveller background to explore and develop their full potential in line with their own dreams and hopes of their ??. Operating Process To provide opportunities for participants to learn and to use the skills acquired; while making full use of the resources that are provided by staff and the ??. We are attempting to develop and upgrade the skills offered to the trainees on a regular basis i.e. in woodwork we are now doing bog oak carving ?? ?? are looking at the possibility of further developing this to basket weaving. In Metalwork we have run modules in copperwork. we are now ?? in the metalcraft area. The trainees have a say in the type of course run at the centre. We are in a building that is very old and not in great repair. The yard outside is also in poor condition. our landlord is attempting to get us out of th ebuilding to enable him to develop the site. So with this in mind it is difficult to progres as we would wish. It is not the policy of the management Committee to get involved in activities outside the Training Centre.
