Welcome to the Fealeside Training Centre

Fealeside Training Centre
Mountmahon Industrial Estate
Abbeyfeale
Co. Limerick
Phone / Fax: 068 31494

The Training Centre was first established in Abbeyfeale in 1979. At that time the Centre operated from a semi-detached house in Colbert Tce., and catered only for girls. In the early 1980’s the Centre moved to a larger premises in New St. In 1981 the centre moved again to its present location in the Industrial Estate, Mountmahon. in this setting it was possible to accommodate boys also.

The Centre was initially set up to co-ordinate and meet the educational and training needs of the young travellers in the Abbeyfeale area. The centre to date is continuing to meet these needs and has made great progress in placing some of our Trainees in full time employment on the estate. We greatly appreciate the ongoing co-operation and help from the local factories.

While the Trainees are the main source of attention at any one time, the needs of their family members are also addressed. The Centre serves as a resource and support service for all the travellers in the area and in addition educational and social events are organised for them through out the year. The Centre promotes the philosophy of equality in its true form.

Administration

The Centre is funded by Co. Limerick V.E.C. They are responsible for the Teachers salaries and the overall running of the Centre. Limerick County Council are represented on the Board of Management and their social work staff actively support the centre and trainees when required.

The operation of the Training Centre is administered through a Board of Management. Represented on this Board are V.E.C., Limerick County Council, Dept. Of Justice, Local Travellers support group, Local Community figures, Clergy and the Director of the Centre. The Board meet on a monthly basis to consider and deliberate the ongoing function of the Centre.

The Team

The Centre has a staff of 3 full time and 2 part-time teachers. One of these Teachers is also a Director.

The Future of the Centre

The Future success of the Centre depends on two things as follows:
1) The quality of the Trainees at the post-training stage
2) The availability of placements and the support of local enterprises in this regard.

The commitment of the Teaching team, the Trainees and their Families is apparent. But the Centre does not wish to look only inward. It would wish to contribute in some way to the overall good of the Community to be seen as a useful and viable facility seeking to meet the educational and training needs of at least some of the town’s young people.

The Trainees

There are sixteen trainees in the Centre at any one time both boys and girls. Each Trainee will spend 1-2 years in the Centre with a large emphasis being placed on job-placement at the end of that time. The curriculum is broad-based and includes Communications, Food & Cookery, Personal Effectiveness, Preparation for Work, Woodwork, Art, Numeracy, Personal and Interpersonal Skills. Mary Horgan teaches Numeracy, Personal and Interpersonal Skills and carries out the duties of a Director. Ita Shine teaches Communications, Food and Cookery and Personal Effectiveness. Paddy Ceoghegan teaches Woodwork and Preparation for Work. Shirley Supple teaches Communications and Sean Shiels teaches AU.

Throughout the course each Trainee is afforded if at all possible an opportunity to go out to a local place of employment for work experience, in this regard the centre is indebted to the ongoing support and assistance of local employers. On the conclusion of the course each Trainee is encouraged to seek a job placement.
