Roma
and Travellers in the EU
still face discrimination
Roma and Travellers
still face widespread discrimination in the European Union despite recent
legal developments. This was the central message coming out of a seminar
that took place on International Roma Day (April 8th).
The seminar, which
was held at the European Parliament Office in Molesworth Street, was hosted
by Proinsias de Rossa and featured speakers from the European Roma Rights
Centre, the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain, Pavee Point, and the
Roma Support Group Ireland.
A spokesperson of
ENAR Ireland, the organisation organising this seminar, stated: "Considering
the continued discrimination of Travellers in Ireland, it should come
as no surprise that Roma are subjected to the same discrimination."
"As Ireland
had just presented its first report under the Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, this seminar is very timely",
the spokesperson continued. "In particular, the viewpoint of the
Irish government regarding the recognition of Travellers as an ethnic
group was challenged by the CERD and we certainly hope that the government
will reconsider its position."
ENAR Ireland is a
national network of 12 organisations working on racism and related issues.
It aims to highlight particularly developments at European level and how
they relate to the Irish context.
